Day 1: Easy Adventures: Tasty Bites, Scenic Trails & Refreshing Swim
To start your vacation, kick off your day with a leisurely breakfast, explore a couple of beautiful trails around Jasper before cooling off with a refreshing swim.
Breakfast Done Right at Harvest Food & Drink: A Delicious Start to Your Day

Wander through the streets of Jasper to discover the charming town. You might find restaurants you’d like to try throughout your stay. Harvest Food & Drink is the perfect spot to enjoy an excellent breakfast. They have a tasty assortment of food served throughout the day. Take your time to savour your food before heading out for your light excursion.
Peaceful Moments at Patricia Lake: Jasper’s Tranquil Treasure

Patricia Lake loop is located ten minutes north of Jasper on Pyramid Lake Road. The parking lot accommodates approximately ten vehicles; however, trailers are discouraged due to the limited space. An outhouse is located at the trailhead.
The 4.8-kilometre trail in the woods loop starts south of Patricia Lake at the parking lot to the left, after the horse ranch. If you hit Patricia Lake Bungalows, you’ve gone too far. The path starts wide and eventually narrows as you go further into the woods. You’ll encounter a spacious, flat path that leads to Patricia Lake after an uphill.
Tip: Many trails in this area branch off in different directions; be sure to consult the map when approaching a T-intersection. Otherwise, it would be easy to get lost.

If you’re a history buff like Kris, you might want to check for signs of where Habbakuk used to be tied up. There was ”a plan by the British during the Second World War to construct an aircraft carrier out of pykrete (a mixture of wood pulp and ice) for use against German U-boats in the mid-Atlantic”. The plank of wood along the trail and hardened tar is where scuba divers head out in search of it. Learning about the history of this top-secret military experiment, reading key information shared on the trail and seeing the remnants left behind was fascinating for us.
Explore Pyramid Bench: Jasper’s Scenic Trail Network Above the Townsite

After that short one-hour walk, you can keep exploring by crossing Pyramid Lake Road to access trails including Pyramid Bench, north of Jasper’s townsite. These easy trails can be connected to form a bigger loop if you wish. The trail weaves along the road, into the forest and back. It’s a comparatively easy trail with some steeper inclines, but for the most part, it’s a relatively flat trail. The trail heading north runs alongside Pyramid Lake. You’ll be able to walk above the lake and see where you’ll be kayaking the next day.
Swim, Sun and Scenery: A Perfect Summer Day at Annette Lake

Stop in town to grab lunch items at Nesters Market before heading to Lake Annette. It’s an excellent spot for a picnic lunch and swimming. Compared to Pyramid Lake’s cold water, this lake is relatively warm for a mountain lake. It’s easy to spend the afternoon at the lake swimming, kayaking, relaxing on an inflatable, or soaking up the sun. They have grass or sand, depending on where you’d like to spend your time. Outhouses are provided.
The 2024 Jasper wildfire burned around parts of Lake Annette, but the area is now open and safe to visit. The landscape with burnt trees will look a bit different now, but the lake will offer a place for a refreshing swim on hot days.
Tip: Jasper is busy in the summer. Plan to have a cart with you to carry your belongings, as you will likely park far away from the lake. It could be difficult to find parking in the dedicated parking lot.
A Flavourful Finish to the Day

After the day, head back to your hotel for a quick rinse before heading out for supper at the delicious Mad Grizzly restaurant. They offer a variety of food options to choose from, along with wine or beer, to relish after a day in the sun.
Day 2: Paddle Through Paradise: Kayaking Pyramid Lake in Jasper

When heading kayaking on Pyramid Lake in Jasper this summer, you’ll see this dock indicating you’ve reached your destination. The rental booth is right across the road, beside the Pyramid Lake Lodge parking lot.
Tip: Arrive first thing in the morning when the booth opens at 10:00 A.M. It will be the calmest part of the day in terms of tourist activity. There will also be more kayak availability. Later in the day, you might have to wait your turn to go kayaking.
The cost is $45 per hour to rent a single kayak. A double kayak costs $80 per hour to rent. From May 24th to October 5th, renting is available from 10:00 A.M. to 6:00 P.M. every day, with the last rental at 5:00 P.M.

We brought our MEC Fulcrum Guide PFD, which fit comfortably and allowed us to avoid renting, which was a nice benefit.
There is ample space to kayak, allowing you to find your own area on a potentially crowded lake, where you can also spot swimmers and other boaters.
We kayaked to Pyramid Lake Island, where we saw many hikers out for a stroll to explore the area.

From the trail above Pyramid Lake Road, we could see many boaters enjoying the lake at their leisure.
We’ve gone swimming here before, but if you choose this added excitement, it will take your breath away, as the water is freezing.

If you’re kayaking for an hour, you should be done by 11:00 A.M., allowing you time to walk on Pyramid Island, just up the road.

Feel the Power: Exploring the Majestic Athabasca Falls

Grab a snack in town on your way to the mighty Athabasca Falls, a thirty-six-minute drive south from Pyramid Island. These falls are not to be missed in Jasper this summer. The short hike will provide a view of the roaring waterfall. A path will lead hikers to the Athabasca River if you wish to explore the area further. This tourist attraction offers an accessible hike providing a sense of adventure for everyone.
Jasper Culture Food Tour

Lunch will be served after 2:30 P.M. as you participate in a three-hour cultural food tour. It costs $162 per person. You might be lucky enough to stop in at Jasper Pizza Place to eat. When I was there, I had tortellini, which was delicious. Alcoholic pairings will accompany a range of tastes at the four top restaurants. You’ll have the opportunity to meet new people in this small group experience.
After your food tour, if you have a fridge in your room, I suggest grabbing sandwiches and a few snacks to eat for lunch on your day-3 hike, rather than rushing to the grocery store in the morning before heading out.
Day 3: Maligne Lake: Jasper’s Crown Jewel You Have to See to Believe

Drive 45 minutes southeast of Jasper on Maligne Lake Road to reach Maligne Lake. It stretches 22 km long. It’s a gorgeous lake for swimming. Although cold, it can be refreshing on a hot day.
The lake is dotted with numerous backcountry campsites, making it ideal for multi-day kayaking adventures, reminiscent of the stunning paddling trip in Desolation Sound.
Many hikes start from the parking lot and continue higher up in the mountains, such as Opal Hills.
Maligne Lake Cruise
Excited for exploration, start the day at 9 A.M. with a one-and-a-half-hour Maligne Lake cruise to Spirit Island. It starts at $99 per person and increases based on availability for a particular day. It’s essential to book ahead of time during the summer months, as this is a popular activity in this area. The boat operates daily from 9:00 A.M. to 6:00 P.M., from May 30 to September 7, 2025.
Opal Hills Hike: Jasper’s Hidden Gem with Stunning Alpine Views

After the cruise, you’ll be ready around 11 A.M. to start the Opal Hills hike. Outhouses are located near the large parking lot, in case you need to use them before starting the hike. The eight-kilometre challenging loop takes approximately three hours to complete.
The narrow trail begins by climbing between spruce trees, eventually opening up to reveal a 180-degree view as you approach the summit. You might encounter snow on the trail depending on the time of year.

Hiking it counterclockwise is more gradual, as you hike back down the steep part, compared to hiking the steep part first and then gradually going downhill.
Tip: We had our picture taken on the grass, just off the trail, but avoided stepping on plants. Stay on the trails as much as possible to prevent erosion and encourage plant growth.

You’ll see Maligne Lake to the west, offering spectacular vistas for pictures.
Tip: You will be in bear country. Make lots of noise by talking to your partner or yelling to let the bears know you are sharing their space while hiking. Bring bear spray in case you encounter a bear.
Miette Hot Springs
Drive to Miette Hot Springs in the late afternoon after your hike to relax your muscles. It will take approximately two hours to drive from Maligne Lake to the hot springs and back to Jasper in the summer. I’ve made the mistake of going to the hot springs in the evening. But it’s a dangerous idea, as you’ll likely feel sleepy for the drive back to Jasper. I encourage you to head back to town in the late afternoon to ensure a safe return.
Return to your hotel for a quick shower before heading out for dinner.
Becker’s Gourmet Restaurant

Wrap up the day by savouring a glass of wine in Becker’s Charming Gourmet Restaurant. Indulge in delicious entrees with a good range of options if you have a sweet tooth. It’s a relaxing atmosphere located beside the Athabasca River, a five-minute drive south of Jasper on Hwy 93.
Tip: Make a reservation to avoid disappointment, as this is a popular restaurant during the summer.
Day 4: Explore the Icefields: Your Ultimate Athabasca Glacier Experience

Epic Jasper National Park summer activities you can’t miss include the Athabasca Glacier. Book with Icewalks on Viator for $134 per person. The tour lasts three hours, with booking times starting at 9:45 a.m., 11:00 a.m., 2:00 p.m., or 3:00 p.m. Plan to hike five kilometres with an elevation gain of 150 metres. It will be a small group with a maximum size of twelve people. It’s approximately a 1.5-hour drive south from Jasper. Bring your lunch in your Osprey Tempest 24 Pack if you plan to walk during the lunch hour. Snacks might come in handy if you get hungry.
Snow Formations and Deep Crevasses

The hike is slow as you go up the glacier. Many small rivers, varying in size, flow down the mountain as temperatures continue to rise every year. Watch your footing as some water pools look shallow, but there are deep crevasses beneath the water that could lead you under the glacier with no point of return. Stay away from the edge!
Tip: The sun’s reflection off the snow can be intense, so be sure to wear sunglasses at all times. It is colder further up the glacier than in the parking lot. Bring additional layers, such as a windbreaker and a down jacket, to keep you warm at higher altitudes. Read 10 tips to avoid a sunburn.
I highly suggest going with a guide in Jasper this summer. You’ll learn about the terrain, including the movement of glaciers. They will help you navigate the melting snow conditions, surrounded by crevasses. Our tour guide was surprised by the progression of the glacier melt and the large volume of water rushing down the mountain compared to the previous year. Experience the glacier while it’s still around!
After your awesome hike, drive back to Jasper on the Icefields Parkway, one of the most beautiful highways in the world. Take your time to stop and look at the viewpoints. Take pictures of the stunning scenery. Trust me, you’ll be happy to have some spare time in the afternoon to explore! See where the afternoon takes you.
Let Your Adventurous Soul Lead You to Supper
Eat supper wherever your heart leads you. This is the perfect time to try a place you’ve been wanting to check out. Or perhaps you’d like to try a different menu item at a restaurant you’ve already visited in Jasper. Walk around town and see what places you discover.
After supper, take a walk and shop for personal souvenirs. Buy something to remind you of the beautiful trip you had in Jasper.
Final Thoughts
Create lasting memories with this epic 4-day Jasper summer itinerary for adventurous couples. Experience walking on a glacier with a guide, seeing magnificent views from the top of Opal Hills and discovering leisurely walks around town. Spend time near the rushing water of Athabasca Falls, paddling on Pyramid Lake or cruising on Maligne Lake. Meet other travellers on your Jasper culture food tour and while relaxing in the Miette Hot Springs. Enjoy delicious meals at various restaurants in the area. Stay up to date with trails that are open in Jasper. Have a fantastic time discovering new places in the gorgeous mountains!
