Have you ever thought you’d go for a small kayaking trip to enjoy yourself only to lose track of time and go on a longer adventure than you planned? You might have enjoyed chatting with friends while appreciating nature and found yourself hungry, not having brought one of the easy snack ideas for kayaking trips.
There’s a solution! Bring snacks! I like to have them with me, in case I get hungry. It’s important to have different options available as you never know what type of snack you’ll want to eat. It’s a fantastic idea to have a salty option to replenish the salts lost while sweating. A healthy snack option and a sweet treat for my hard work makes a balanced diet. Here are some recommendations.
Table of Contents
1. Juicy Fruit
Here are some examples of juicy fruit that I like to pack along with me.
Mandarin Oranges
Mandarin oranges are a juicy snack that packs nicely and only takes up a small amount of space in your transparent dry bag. You can see exactly what is in your bag and where you have placed each item. Since the mandarin oranges are small, you can bring as many as you’d like for easy snack ideas while kayaking.
Apples
When exercising, I love the feeling of biting into a crunchy juicy apple. It feels refreshing and it adds more taste than a simple drink of water. An apple can quench your thirst if you run out of water. There are many different types of apples you can bring along with you as well. Apples don’t bruise easily, which makes them the perfect fruit to accompany you on your trip. If you like apples and pears, a combo of the two, such as an apple pear, can be a wonderful option. Pears can be quite soft and juicy. I prefer mine crunchy. An apple pear is a good balance between the crunchiness of the apple and some juiciness of the pear. This is something to keep in mind if you want to try something new or different.
Nectarines
Biting into a juicy nectarine that drips down your hand and offers a nice sugary taste in your mouth, is a welcome fruit. It makes you feel like you’re on a tropical island somewhere, which may be exactly where you want to be, instead of reality, close to a city. But, at least you’re out kayaking, which provides a temporary escape from your weekly routine! On the plus side, this sugary treat is healthy for you! Perfect! They do bruise quite easily, though.
Tip: Bring a plastic Ziploc bag to put your core in beforehand (to prevent it from leaking into your bag) and throw your core into it after you’re done eating. Otherwise, you’ll have nowhere to throw your core once you’re finished, and it could potentially leak, causing a sticky mess in your bag. You can also throw your mandarin orange peels into your bag.
2. Lärabars
If you’re on a sensitive diet unable to eat wheat, eggs, and milk and unsure what granola bars are available for you to eat, Lärabars are a wonderful option! They are gluten-free, vegan, and have nine ingredients at most. They are an excellent energy bar. Some have nuts but not all of them. You can avoid nuts if you have an allergy and pick a different flavour. They have many different options with mixtures of fruit, chocolate, coconut and dates. Varieties include peanut butter, chocolate chip, cinnamon roll, carrot cake, mint chip brownie, apple pie, cherry pie, and blueberry muffin. There are multiple options depending on your tastes.
If you haven’t tried this bar before, you might want to consider it. Even if you aren’t on a sensitive diet, sometimes it’s nice to try something different. You never know, it might end up being your favourite snack! I highly suggest including this in your snack ideas for kayaking.
3. Peanut Galore Mix
Next, on my list of easy snack ideas for kayaking is the peanut galore mix. You can find it in Rexall pharmacies. There is an assortment of nuts covered in chocolate and yogurt. Some nuts are covered in a crunchy honey texture, that tastes so good! There’s a pleasant taste in every bite. For those of you who can eat it, the peanut galore mix was a fantastic find. It doesn’t need to be eaten in large quantities. Every once in a while, if you need a boost, you can take out your mix and have a bite to eat.
Tip: Stay away from this one if you have a nut or peanut allergy.
4. Caribbean Fruit and Nut Mix
The Caribbean fruit reminds me of when I was at Majestic Resort kayaking in Punta Cana. The fresh fruit was tasty after our excursion.
Although not the same, the Caribbean fruit and nut mix is a delicious option for kayaking near home. It contains dried pineapple, coconut, and papaya for additional flavours with some pumpkin seeds thrown in. I love the almond and peanut crunch as well. This option is a bit healthier compared to the other nut mixes. The fruit adds a pleasant texture if you like it chewy. It’s a tasty easy snack idea for kayaking. Nuts are delicious and healthy for you. It’s one of the reasons, I often choose to include them in my snacks. This nut package offers a nice variety. It’s easier to bring dried fruit kayaking instead of fruit in its natural form.
For those of you who prefer not to have a mixture of chocolate, Caribbean Fruit and Nut Mix is a good option. When it’s sunny, chocolate pieces tend to clump together creating a big ball of chocolate instead of individual pieces. This can make for a messy snack.
Tip: This mix tends to give you a scratchy dry throat if you don’t hydrate. Make sure to drink plenty of water to wash it down. You don’t want an irritated throat!
5. Texas Cajun Mix
This Cajun Mix adds some good spice to your easy snack ideas for kayaking. This mix incorporates peanuts, and crunchy corn, which is a nice addition. It’s delightful to change things up. When going on a long-distance adventure such as Kayaking Desolation Sound, it’s wise to have a variety of food options. After a while, without different snack choices to eat, you might become bored of the food you brought. Keep things exciting and spice things up! When on a trip for five days, make sure to switch out your snacks and rotate through them. I keep some of this Cajun Mix (that I like) for the end of the trip when I know I’ll need a boost to keep me going.
It costs $5.99 at Rexall for a 250 g bag and always seems to be in stock, which is fantastic! I’m not normally a fan of spicy, but I quite like this one. Be open-minded as this one might be a delicious option for you.
6. Honey Stinger Organic Energy Chews
Honey Stinger Organic Chews are the last easy snack ideas for kayaking. The organic energy chews provide a boost of energy when you’re lacking fuel to keep moving. The Orange Blossom Chews are a favourite, for many people. It’s fun to feel like a kid again eating a chewy snack that tastes wonderful and offers different flavours while being health-focused. It can be a nice alternative to nuts. Your taste buds might appreciate something different. One package costs $3.49 at MEC. It’s affordable to purchase and bring a few different varieties. It’s also great to include in 6 Stocking Stuffers for X-Country Skiers.
